JCR Motorsports driver Jeff Courtney finished the Pirelli World Challenge double-header weekend at Sonoma Raceway with a second place and sixth place finish on August 22-24, 2014.
Courtney, of Milwaukee, WI, qualified his No. 99 Kenda/RecStuff.com Audi R8 Ultra in fifth position on the GT-A grid for Saturday’s Round 13 race with a flyer lap of 1:36.094
The 50-minute sprint race was placed under a full course caution almost immediately when multiple competitors made heavy contact on the start that resulted in a seven lap yellow flag. Luckily, Courtney was able to accomplish a clean start and gain one position off of the launch. When green flag racing resumed Courtney steadily made his way through the field without putting a scratch on his Audi R8 Ultra. Courtney crossed the checkered flag in second place with a nine second lead over his third place competitor.
“We got banged around again at the start of the race but came out of it pretty much intact (the R8 is a tough race car!) After that it was pretty uneventful for us. I just put my head down and drove as hard as I could and with a little help finished on the second step of the podium” said Courtney
A fast race lap of 1:38:074 placed Courtney in fifth position for Sunday’s race. Courtney had another great launch and gained two positions on the standing start. Courtney was racing hard for position and swapped spots multiple times during an intense battle with competitors Henrik Hedman. Unfortunately, a competitor laid down a significant amount of oil in the esses that caused Courtney to spin and allowed Hedman to sneak past him. The race ultimately ended under a full course yellow with Courtney in sixth position.
“It was unfortunate to get caught in someone else’s oil because we had a pretty fast race car, even better than Saturday! But it did make for a great late race battle with Henrick. I also had some family and friends at this event and just wanted to thank them for all their support here!” said Courtney
